The new Underwater Video System is up and running. Coach Albert and Coach Carla have both videotaped their swimmers and done a stoke analysis with them. With slow motion and stop-frame capabilities the swimmer's strokes are scrutinized. Some swimmers found it hard to believe the technical shortcomings of their strokes when they first were able to witness themselves swimming "on-screen". Many commented on how they never before understood how deep their pull was or how far appart their legs came during their kick.
Video Analaysis addresses the visual learning style best. It is a learning style that the current generation has embraced. They are exposed to visual media daily through the use of and/or interaction with computers and Smart Boards in their schools.
For coaches it allows for a depth fo analysis not always possible. Often the flaws in technique go un-noticed because they happen under water and under the swimmer's body making it impossible for coaches to see. The camera allows coaches to "see" what is happening from different perspectives: side; head on; from the feet; and from underneath looking up towards the surface.
We are hoping to further enhance this wonderful learning/teaching tool with our above water video camera and the use of the "Dartfish" movement analization software available to us through the Alberta Sport Development Centre. This software will allow for split screen viewing (two shots at once) or two swimmers side by side.
Some time in the not to distant future we will be able to post some video clips on-line. Stay tuned!
